Overview

ProfLab is a program of creative training for teachers, created in Recife. Giordano Cabral was one of the program's educators between 2017 and 2019, in the Game Design Thinking training, with educator and game designer Yvonne Carvalho. In the workshop, teachers build a game as a team and then play the games produced by the class; the conceptual presentation comes after the experience. Lattes records four offerings: Gamificação na Educação (2017), ProfLab — Game Design Thinking (2018), ProfLab (Formação de Professores) (2019) and Game Design Thinking para Educadores (2019). Pages: souproflab.com.br, Level UP! and Giordano Cabral's page on the program, from December 15, 2016.

What participants do

Teams of up to six people create a game in class that the entire class can play, lasts no more than five minutes, and is fun — immersion, ideation, selection, presentation — and then the class plays what they have made. The conceptual material comes after the experience: the elements that appear in the games, extrinsic and intrinsic motivation, and Werbach and Hunter's pyramid. The readings: A Theory of Fun for Game Design, "Fourteen Forms of Fun", Oracle's material on gamification in UX, Jane McGonigal's talk, and Games for Change. The material closes with Yvonne Carvalho's account of having a history class play Travian for two months until a student realized on their own: "we're Rome, aren't we?".
