Medicine & psychiatry
Medical training, research and university extension.
Medical training
I graduated in Medicine at the Federal University of Pernambuco in September 2022. Since March 2024, I have been undertaking residency training in Psychiatry at Hospital Ulysses Pernambucano, within the Pernambuco State Health Department. Completion is expected in February 2027.
During my medical degree, I participated in clinical and experimental research, student teaching and university extension. The publications below concern respiratory function in preschool children and inflammatory responses in people with lymphedema. My extension activities are presented in Outreach.
Respiratory function in preschool children
Young children can find the forced breathing maneuvers used in spirometry difficult. Impulse oscillometry measures respiratory mechanics during quiet breathing. In a study of 76 preschool children, we examined the feasibility and reproducibility of these measurements, including their response to a bronchodilator and their relationship with respiratory symptoms.
Inflammatory markers and lymphedema
Evaluating a treatment for lymphedema involves examining both swelling and the underlying inflammatory process. This randomized study compared complex decongestive therapy and aquatic physiotherapy, measuring inflammatory markers and lower-limb volume. The reduction in TNF-α observed after decongestive therapy was accompanied by no statistically significant reduction in limb volume, illustrating the importance of distinguishing the outcomes being measured.

Research and teaching
My undergraduate research included two projects in UFPE’s PIBIC program: metabolomic assessment of wheezing in infants (2018–2019, supervised by José Ângelo Rizzo), and the effects of exercise and vitamin C on alveolar macrophage oxidant activity in an experimental model of perinatal malnutrition (2019–2020, supervised by Erika Michelle Correia de Macedo Barbosa).
I also undertook student teaching assistantships in Histology and in Personal and Professional Development, including activities in mental health. Community projects and the academic pathology league are described in Outreach.
