According to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brazilian_Institute_of_Geography_and_Statistics\">IBGE<\/a>&#8216;s July 2014 report, the city had a total population of 862,044, while <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greater_Natal\">Greater Natal<\/a> had 1,485,505 inhabitants.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The implementation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Via_Costeira\">Via Costeira<\/a> (Coastal Highway), 10&nbsp;km (6.2 miles) long <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avenue_(landscape)\">avenue<\/a>  along the shore and the dunes, was the true starting point for the  beginning of tourist activity in the State in the 1980s. The main hotels  are concentrated along Via Costeira. Natal has several tourist  attractions and is known for its natural environment (such as the waters  of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maracaja%C3%BA\">Maracaja\u00fa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cashew_of_Pirangi\">the largest cashew tree in the world<\/a>), for its historical monuments and buildings (<em>e.g.<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Forte_dos_Reis_Magos\">Forte dos Reis Magos<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alberto_Maranh%C3%A3o_Theatre\">Alberto Maranh\u00e3o Theatre<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Newton_Navarro_Bridge\">Newton Navarro Bridge<\/a>), for its beaches (such as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ponta_Negra\">Ponta Negra<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pipa_beach\">Pipa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Genipabu\">Genipabu<\/a>) and also for its off-season <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carnival\">carnival<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carnatal\">Carnatal<\/a>.
