It is the second most important economic centre of mainland Southern Italy<\/a> after Naples<\/a> (the third after Palermo<\/a> if insular Italy is included), a port<\/a> and universi<\/a>t<\/a>y<\/a> city, as well as the city of Saint Nicholas<\/a>. The city itself has a population of 326,799, as of 2015, over 116 square kilometres (45 sq mi), while the urban area has 750,000 inhabitants.
