As the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_cities_in_British_Columbia\">most populous city<\/a> in the province, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canada_2016_Census\">2016 census<\/a> recorded 631,486 people in the city, up from 603,502 in 2011. The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greater_Vancouver\">Greater Vancouver<\/a> area had a population of 2,463,431 in 2016, making it the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_census_metropolitan_areas_and_agglomerations_in_Canada#List\">third-largest metropolitan area in Canada<\/a>. Vancouver has the highest population density in Canada with over 5,400 people per square kilometre,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vancouver#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vancouver#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup> which makes it the fifth-most densely populated city with over 250,000 residents in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_America\">North America<\/a> behind <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\">New York City<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guadalajara\">Guadalajara<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisco\">San Francisco<\/a>,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vancouver#cite_note-2011density-ranked-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mexico_City\">Mexico City<\/a> according to the 2011 census.
