The workshop will take place at Jurerê Beach Village, a hotel located in Jurerê Beach, in the northern coast of the Santa Catarina Island.
Florianópolis and Conference Venue
Florianópolis, or Floripa as it is called by the Brazilians, is the state
capital of Santa Catarina and one of the most popular tourist destinations in
South America. It is located on an island connected to the mainland by two
bridges. This island is a delicious slice of paradise with over 520 Km2 (200
sq mi) of green hills, lagoons and 42 beaches.
The beaches of the north part of the island have calm waters and modern
tourist facilities. Jurerê, Canasvieiras and Ingleses are the most sought
after by tourists. The beaches of Joaquina, Mole and Barra da Lagoa on the
east side of the island are the meeting point for young people who practice
radical sports. Conceição Lagoon, surrounded by sand dunes and seafood
restaurants are a great location for enjoying fresh air and good food.
The south part of the island displays the characteristics and the culture of
the Azoreans who settled the region 250 years ago. Beaches such as Campeche
and Pântano do Sul are attractive for their peacefulness, colorful boats and
fishing nets. Villages immersed in tradition and history, such as Armação and
Ribeirão da Ilha resist the advances of modernity.
The city center, located in the west side of the island, is the major commerce
and services center of the state, provinding all the facilities that modern
life may require. In this area you can find business hotels, a modern
convention center, shopping centers, restaurants and nightclubs.
The weather in the region is subtropical, with four well-defined seasons
during the year. The symposium will take place during the spring, when the
temperature should be between 20 and 30oC (68 to 86F).
Today Florianópolis is a busy
commercial center. Industries produce metallurgical and electrical
communications equipment, pharmaceuticals, plastics, and perfume.

Arriving in
Florianópolis
The main Brazilian international airports connecting to Florianópolis are Rio
de Janeiro, São Paulo and Porto Alegre. The last two are the most convenient
for foreign participants who intend to continue their flight to Florianópolis.
Transportation
A Taxi ride from the airport to the city center costs about R$ 45 (US$15), and
a ride to the beaches in the north of the island will cost around R$75 (US$25).
A good option is to book a transfer from the Airport to your hotel.
Climate
The period of the Conference falls at the beginning of a subtropical Spring
with
temperatures ranging from a minimum of 12-15oC at night to
20-30oC in the daytime . Summer clothing and light warm clothing
are recommended. Bring your swimwear and sunscreen.
Currency
The Brazilian currency is the Real (R$). The currently mean exchange rate is
about 1 US$ per R$2,90

here).
Major credit cards are accepted for payment in nearly all hotels, restaurants
and shops. Most of the currencies can be exchanged by Reais at "casas de
câmbio" (money exchange). You can also withdraw local currency from ATMs at
the airport and several other locations.
Electricity
The electricity current in Florianópolis is 220V, 60Hz.
Visa
Brazil adopts a policy based on reciprocity. As a consequence, nationals of the following countries do not need a Visa to travel to Brazil:

Nationals of other countries must obtain a Tourist Visa. Passports must be valid for at least six months. The first entry into Brazil must be made within 90 days from the date the visa is issued. Please contact the Brazilian Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence (US, Canada, Japan, and other countries).
Vaccinations
Vaccination is not necessary unless you live or have visited a country affected by yellow fever. Vaccination against yellow fever is also recommended for travelers intending to visit the Amazon Rain Forest (4.000 Km from Florianópolis).
