We do not have required projects of this type at UCSD --- in fact it is rare at US colleges to have something of this type be required of all students. One exception that I know if is that at Princeton, there are final year projects (and junior year projects). In mathematics, students tended to read some fairly current mathematics research and write a thesis. Some students write an Honors Thesis. These are only the better students, and they are awarded a "laude", "cum laude", or "summa cum laude" degree afterwards. Come to thing of it, I have never heard of anyone at UCSD doing this, so I guess we don't have it here. I wrote an honors thesis myself -- typically these are similar in format to a Master's thesis, but lower level in difficulty. UCSD does have "undergraduate research projects". These are projects that may span a year of work and culminate in a presentation made to faculty and other students. They generally involve writing a paper, or preparing a report. Hope this helps, Sam
